Luke 8:26-39

“…they found the man from whom the demons had gone …”

The evil one is real and there are evil forces that oppose all that is God and all that God desires for humankind and the world. Whenever you find yourself taking unwise risks, pursuing deadly habits, excessively fearful or seeking isolation (to name a few) do as the man did, fall down before Jesus. (vs. 28) Let Jesus’ holiness and power address the destructive forces that disturb your peace and intend your harm. Do this, though, in the context of a spiritually mature and trusted community.

“…sitting at the feet of Jesus …”

The man, formerly frenzied, living among the dead and driven wild by the demonic spirits that held him, now sits peacefully and humbly at the feet of Jesus. What a picture of the perfection God desires for us, and of how to attain such perfection: sit at Jesus’ feet. Learn from him, take his words to heart and live accordingly. Keep near to Jesus and the evil one is kept at bay. What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” (vs.28)

“…clothed …”

The man, formerly naked, without the protection of a garment to shield him from the elements and without common human dignity, now is clothed. Someone had given him a robe to wear. Clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience and especially love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. (Col. 3:12,14) These are the garments that protect you from the evil one’s attempt to shame you and through you harm others.

“…and in his right mind.”

The man, formerly believing himself more at home among the dead than the living, now can reason properly. His mind is put right, he is in touch with reality. He no longer believes he’s deserving of death, he knows he is alive and important to Jesus’ mission. He’s given an assignment, Return home, and declare how much God has done for you. (vs. 39) It is a good spiritual practice to take every thought captive to obey Christ. (2 Cor 10:5). Your thoughts, submitted to truth, sets you free. (John 8:32)
